This handwoven necklace was originally designed by Shirley Berlin and a friend while driving across the of great state of Wyoming. The brown and beige tones are perfect for braiding and it is woven using 10 strands of Italian Ribbon on a Kumihimo foam disk. The ribbon has hues of metallic red, blue and silver so has a lot of character with the neutral brown and beige tones. The braid is amazingly lightweight and is not in the least bit itchy. An extra strong bronze toned acrylic magnet allows you to wear with no worry of it falling off. It measures 19.5" yet is amazingly light weight.
Akalei is the Hawaiian word for "bead reflections" which describes this unique style only available here on Maui. We specialize in designing a wide range of modern yet familiar Hawaiian lei. Please send an email to info@akaleidesigns.com.
Kumihimo is an ancient Japanese braid making technique that creates beautiful and strong interlaced cords. This art form goes back hundreds of years as braids were made for use in armor of Japanese samurai warriors. In modern times these braids are designed as belts (obijime) used on kimonos.
